War
: One of U2's better alblums, and War certainly had its fair share of radio airplay. However if you're really looking for strong political rock I'd strongly recommend Billy Bragg (any), The Clash (thru Sandinista!) or the brasher, early U2 Irish predecessor band Stiff Little Fingers (Hanx!) prior to picking up U2.
I'll admit, I wasn't really into U2 until this year. War was one of the first U2 albums that I bought. It's very political which is what I like about it. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a very powerful song. When you listen to the song(and all U2 songs)you really get a clear picture of what's going on. "Seconds" is a herald of what might happen when 2 superpowers take things too far.Apocalyptic, but very good. "New Year's Day" is very energetic and the guitar work and vocals are amazing. "Two Hearts Beat as One" is another classic and one of my favorite songs. "Surrender" is a clever song and another one that I love."40" is a beautiful song. FYI-It was taken from Psalm 40. It's about fighting but gives a hopeful message for peace at the end. "War" is a powerful kinda angsty CD,but it's a great listen.
there is somthing special here, and in most other U2's cds. If you dont own this album its like committing a musical crime. Also make sure you own Achtung Baby, that is U2's more recent masterpiece. Meaningfull lyrics, distinct sound, this music will live on forever!
War was my first U2 album, which means nothing in the scope of this band as I bought in high school, and just graduated. War did one thing better than any of the other albums. It appealed to a more hard rock audience. This was exactly why this album caught me. I was (and still am) a huge fan of heavy metal, but I've always enjoyed a lot of punk and hard rock. This is the hardest U2 album, and certainly the angriest. As far as songs go, there isn't a misfire on the whole album. Refugee does seem a bit out of place, but it's still a good song, and I'm not sure if it would have seemed comfortable on any other U2 album anyway. Standouts include the obvious Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day, as well as lesser known title such as Like A Song and Surrender. If U2 seems a little too 'light' for you, then give this a try. It could reel you into the world of overpriced U2 masterpieces.
This is one of the most powerful and mesmerizing CDs ever recorded. Lyrically, it's a masterpiece.
