Here are some customer reviews of
The System Has Failed
: another masterpiece !this album just briliant
dave proof he still able to do something killer
this record if not better then countdown to extinction it is at least much much better thenb the last 2 albums!
TWNAH is just nothing compare to this one
blackmail the universe and kick the chair sounds completly like rust in peace style
the 2nd track is the single which has another great singing by dave , another song with great singing is scorpion!!
tears in a vial is my fav tune! absolutely great singing, lyrics, melodic riff , solo by dave and chris and speed outro!
back in the day is my 2nd fave tune. it sounds just like NWOBHM , great riff with sing along outro
something i'm not is probably has the most interesting riff in the albu. it start with a simple riff then gets heavier on the bridge and chorus and finally turn into mustaine typical fingering riff in during the fast solos, and there's another cool riff at the outro. briliant
truth be told is typical megadeth old school type of songs
start heavy then melodic singing with aqoustic at the verse and goes heavy on the chorus, it get heavier after the second chorus and finally thrash at the last one and half minutes.
of mice and man is another good song with great lyrics and melodic singing
shadow of deth is great song with very melodic guitar harmony
and followed with my kingdom which probably the weakest track on the album but still sounds awesome
there's no weak track like burning bridge, silent scorn, losing my sense, when of those type of filler track like on TWNAH
defenitely must buy!!!
And that is late model Megadeth. If you're not a fan of the past 5 years, I doubt you're going to get all pumped after listening to this album.
I went by fans' comments (loose quotes here) such as, "this is a return to thrash", "the greatest album since Rust In Peace", and "the old Megadeth is finally back". All I can say is that I don't agree with that mentality. I see this album as the modern era band. Not enough anger, too much singing, over production... all in all just not as heavy as my tastes prefer.
More power to ya if you can thrash out to this, but if didn't like The World Needs A Hero, I don't think you're going to like this one. I've listened to this disc a few times. Nothing yet has me hooked, and not one song stands out to me as just being great... something that I just want to listen to because it is awesome in it's own unique way. I really hate to say that. Reading and hearing tons of comments all over the place, I was jacked up to hear this new album.
Listen to this album once, twice, whatever it takes. Take it all in. After playing this disc, pop in Rust In Peace and tell me how it compares? Does this really sound this a successor to that style of sound? If you like modern Megadeth, you'll like this. If you're not too keen on it, don't get your hopes up.
If you dont know by now, The System Has Failed will be Megadeth's last studio offering, and what a great offering it is. Who would have thought that Dave Mustaine would come back and strike with spit fire hits, a blend of new and old, which hint upon Countdown To Extinction and Youthenasia. (I hope I spelled those right) Thrash legend and pioneer Dave Mustaine does not dissapoint on this album lyrically, his lyrics will haunt you for decades as any Megadeth fan should know. Here is a break down of all the tracks.
Blackmail The Universe: 10/10
Die Dead Enough: 9/10
Kick The Chair: 10/10
The Scorpian: 9/10
Tears In A Vial: 8/10
I know Jack: 40 second instrumental: 5/10 great riffs and drums, Dave should have made it in to a full instrumental track.
Back In The Day: 11/10 My fav track.
Something Im Not: 8/10
Truth Be Told: 8/10
Of Mice and Men: 8/10
Shadow of Death: 5/10 another small snippet, could have done more with it
My Kingdom Come 9/10
This album is way better then their last two efforts combined. This album should get all the neumetal fans in to Megadeth and away from the utter cheese that is going around, a great album to start of you Megadeth collection. Some people compare evreything Megadeth do to Rust In Peace, this is by no means Rust In Peace 2, however it is a great album. Great return for a thrash legend. If you compare evreything ANY ARTIST does to Megadeth's Rust In Peace, you will never satisfy yourself b/c nothing can top Rust In Peace, even Metallicas Master of Puppets, Ride The Lightning, and And Justice For All fall victim to Rust In Peace. Let it rest in peace and open your mind and enjoy The System Has Failed, Ive gone through the album once and love it. This is also one of those albums that you have to listen to a million times to appriciate and grow on you, Once Ive done this I will post another review. Hope this helps, Get this album today, you will not be dissapointed.
I downloaded "Kick The Chair" off the Megadeth website and thought it sounded too generic. But, when put in context with the rest of the album, it rocks. I do think the last three tracks are kind of weak, but my main objective was to point out that the lyrics in "I Know Jack" were in reference to JFK, but NOT directed at Ted Kennedy; they were directed at then-VP-hopeful Dan Quayle at a VP debate in response to Quayle saying "I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency." The words were spoken by Lloyd Bentsen (Mike Dukakis' running mate).
Solid from start to finish! Coming from a very critical and just plain picky rock/metal reviewer, this album is indeed a breath of fresh air; to say the least.
Reuniting with former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland, with session musicians Jimmy Sloas on bass and Jimmy Coliuta on drums and written (lyrics and music) solely by Dave Mustaine without any influence at the time, The System Has Failed was completed but as a solo album. Due to contractual obligations to Mustaine's publisher it was forced to have Megadeth's name on the cover.
The music is well driven with pounding, complicated riffs and solos. But don't come across the idea that the whole album is like another Rust in Peace. It is very unique yet the music spans Megadeth's whole career, sound-wise. With songs that successfully cross-breed Countdown to Extinction, So Far, So Good ,So What, and even Cryptic Writings. We even have the return of the gang-vocal that graced albums in the past like Peace Sells. The melodies on TSHF are just amazing. Most songs have Dave's stacked vocal melodies and blew me away. Mustaine's singing is superb. Snarl, scream, or tranquil story telling, the man nails it.
The lyrics are charged with the zeal of metal ranging from politics, the media, Mustaine's life and even the nail in the coffin for Metallica, mainly towards Lars Ulrich in "Something That I'm Not." "Blackmail the Universe" kicks off like "Holy Wars" on Rust in Peace; an epic song. "The Scorpion" is another stand out track based on an esope fable which I believe is worthy of Megadeth's second single title after "Die Dead Enough."
Though the album has political influence, this is NOT an anti-Bush album. Nor is it biased toward any form of the political spectrum. With songs like "Kick the Chair" it simply states the inconsistency in the government in general. But for what it's worth, these subjects make great Megadeth songs and always have. This is undoubtedly a triumph in metal today.
Make sure to check out Oct. `04 Guitar World magazine which I believe to be the most helpful in understanding Dave and what happened up to this point in Megadeth.
