Surfer Rosa
: This album efficiently sums up the brilliance that is the Pixies. No one screams better than Black Francis and Kim Deal's catchy base lines and curiously cute but edgy voice provides the perfect contrast to the slightly deranged sounds of Black Francis (aka Frank Black) Every song is solid and this album should be required for anyone attending University of Massachusetts, Frank Black's alma matre...It won't disappoint, they don't make them like this anymore!
An original indie record from a seminal, true alternative band. Sparse melodies, unique vocal styles and music that can show finesse (Where Is My Mind) and then crash-land into blistering punk (Oh My Golly). I still think some of today's rock music (Korn, The Vines, Foo Fighters) is trying to catch up with this one. I first heard it in 1987, when I was a headstrong Rush fan and classic rocker. This album opened me up to the possibility that great music does not necessarily need airplay. If you're a rocker and rock out, BUY THIS ALBUM!
I know that this probably won't be read, but I'd just like to say this is raw Pixies. From "Bone Machine's" sudden stops and screams to the calming peace of "Where is my Mind?" to the spanish style beat and sliding notes of "Vamos", "SURFER ROSA" is perhaps one of the greatest achievements of the Pixies. This was the album, symbolizing their earlier work, unfiltered and caustic. I'd suggest this to any alternative lover.
This album is nothing less than amazing. Don't listen to the reviewers who say that this album is boring or overrated. I can listen to these songs no matter what kind of mood I'm in. I listen to it almost constantly. The melodies are downright beautiful, yet the music somehow manages to be extremely harsh and angry at the same time. Black Francis has the best voice in rock and Kim Deal complements him perfectly. I only have one warning: Listen to this with an open mind! It is very weird at first!
The pixies are the founders of alt. rock as we know it. It sounds like the superfan giving it five stars but Surfer Rosa deserves all it gets and more. From the thumping drum intro on "Break my Body" to the playfulness of "Brick is Red" every song is a masterpiece. Every chord complements and every note rings louder then the last. Surfer Rosa is by far the best record of the eighties and my favorite of all time.
