Here are some customer reviews of Sex and the City :

This book gives a voice to all the jerks out there, but with on irony. This was the first book to imiatate "The Wild Girls Club" by Anka Radakovich. (A great book.) In fact, two chapters were copyed from Anka's articles in Details Magazine which were published six months before this book came out. How embarrassing.

It is amazing that the spectacular HBO series "Sex and the City" was based on this book. Candace Bushnell really lucked out in getting her name associated with the series, because the book is NOTHING like the series! Sure, she mentions familiar character names, but Stanford is straight & good-looking in the book, for goodness sake! The book characters are inconsistent, mean, and worst of all, boring. I made it about two-thirds of the way through the book before I gave up. I'd suggest reading Bridget Jones' Diary instead if you want a good read about a single woman.

I found this to be one of the silliest, most frivolous, and depressing books on life in Manhattan. The vignettes are disheartening, the characters are shallow on the surface (I shall not comment on their deeper reasons for being), the writing is haphazard and unconnected, and when a plot finally emerges it barely has the legs to make it to the book's welcome ending. Its clear that Ms. Bushnell is satirizing the book's main women characters. However, she would have done well to let us learn more about each one rather than the snippets of random conversation sprinkled throughout. The only character readers really get to know is Carrie (Ms. Bushnell's alter-ego?) who at times releases independent thoughts and glimmers of feeling. Mostly, however, Carrie just leads us on, tempting us that she will show some real emotion or tell us exactly what she's thinking. Unfortunately, she does not. With all Manhattan has to offer in terms of its people and possibilities, Ms. Bushnell has decided to focus on a loud but insignificant, dysfunctional, and minute slice of this great city.

The characters from the show are in here as minor players, but not close to how we recognize them from the show today. Still a fun enjoyable read!

Sex in the City is a marvelous tale of the urban search for lust and love. For all of us who have loved and been left, it's a satisfying story that examines that unhappy terrain, but ultimately ends on a hopeful, if not entirely optimistic, note.
