Settlers of Catan Board Game
: My family got this game a year or so ago, and we've been addicted ever since. Somehow the game establishes a mix of strategy and luck such that new comers can pick it up pretty quickly and aren't at too big of a disadvantage to veterans. We take it to large family gatherings, and there's a game going continuously once we get it out.
I was introduced to this game 2 years ago, but in that time it has become one of the most played games ever in our household. Almost everyone who plays it wants to play it again immediately after finishing a game. The best thing about this game is that it introduced me to designer games (mostly by designers in Europe) and my game collection has ballooned since. This is a great game to start with and it has many expansions, some better than others, but the 5-6 player expansion is well worth the money.
Settlers of Catan is more than a game. To some, it can become an obsession. My friends and I played two or three games a night most nights of the week over the past summer. The game is different every time you play it. Everyone can develop their own strategy. It is infrequent that a person feels they have no chance of winning, there is always the possibility. After one game, a person has enough experience to feel confident to play on their own. It is vital you read the rules, some seem minor, but can make the difference between winning and losing.
Our family loves to play Risk but, it takes a long time. This game is similar but, you can play a complete game in two hours or less. We've played Risk games that lasted two days. It took reading the instructions a couple times to get the hang of it. After the first game we were hooked. This has become our favorite family game. I highly recommend this game!
Of all the games that I know, Settlers of Cataan is the one game that seems to fun for all of my friends. Short enough to play in an hour or less, Settlers is a great three and four player game because the game is fundamentally constructive (and so messy get-the-leader problems are usually avoidable) and strategic (so that you feel like you are growing a small civilization). Also, there is enough luck so that most of the time everyone thinks they have a chance. I would recommend this game to everyone, game-lovers and game-haters alike. END
