Set This Circus Down
: The progression in his work comes out in this new CD. Expecting things similar to previous albusm such as Everywhere or A Place In the Sun, This new album comes with new sounds and creativity. Gallimor and McGraw always delight, and this album is no different, as each song paints yet another story to had to his incredible collection.
Tim's in fine form with great rock hooks (including "Angel Boy," "Unbroken," "Smilin'"), very pretty ballads (including "You Get Used To Somebody," "The Cowboy In Me," "Forget About Us," "Angry All The Time," and "Grown Men Don't Cry.") "Grown Men Don't Cry" is socially astute like Tim's "One Of These Days" from the album Everywhere, and "Angry All The Time" is a masterful breakup song that is lyrically deeper than many ballads of its kind. Even the couple filler-types sound good. For fans of traditional music, there's a little more steel guitar on here than you might expect.
While listening through "Set This Circus Down", I can understand why Tim McGraw was so upset last fall at Curb Records decision to release a greatest hits package instead of the new album. This is more than a "usual" collection of songs coming from many country artists today. He doesn't really step outside of the lines of traditional country, but he walks along the edge. Most everyone alive listening to country music has heard "Things Change" and "Grown Men Don't Cry". These are not extremely strong vocal pieces, but great message songs. From this, you turn to "Angry All The Time", a song unlike anything McGraw has recorded before. This is a strongly emotional song, one of sadness and loneliness....something you would not image Tim understanding. It has to be the strongest vocal on the album....and knowing Bruce Robinson (the writer) material, it is not easy to lay a vocal better than Bruce. I cannot say that I find Tim's vocal to be better, but the song was not lost the way I see many lost when non-writers record them. The rest of the album is true Tim McGraw: a spanish flair song, some fun honky-tonk, beer-drinking music, and some great ballads. Less of the I am finding myself theme of "Everywhere" and I have found happiness theme of "A Place In the Sun".......McGraw is now saying "Here I Am!" trying to please himself and his fans, less of the industry.
This guy sings all over the radio that he doesn't know why they say grown men don't cry. Because they don't. Stop being such a wimp! He has a good-looking wife, though. Buy her stuff instead.
man tim mcgraw just keeps busting out the best country cd's. this one is i think his best EVER, the first time you hear it you know that things change, grown men don't cry, set this circus down, telluride, let me love you, cowboy in me are going to be number 1 hits, and he has the song of the year with unbroken. bottom line-this is one of the best contry cds you can get
