Santa Fe Quesadilla Maker
: I thought this looked clever, and it works fine for quesadillas, but it's actually a fantastic all-purpose appliance. You can cook waffle dough in it, batters, biscuits - whether homemade or bought, scrambled eggs, muffin doughs, bar cookies, croquettes made with leftovers and eggs - it really works sensationally well for a huge variety of things. I can't eat wheat, but I bet bread dough would make great Indian naan bread. I haven't tried making fritters (like grated vegetables in batter) but I am certain it will do a fine job. It's inexpensive and extremely useful. It's also very quick - I can make good waffle-pancakes in under 8 minutes where it takes my waffle iron 12. I recommend this to everyone - and experiment with even more possibilities!
I adore quesadillas. The quesadilla maker is good to turn out what I would classify as minimally acceptable quesadillas, but not outstanding quesadillas. I found that I was able to crank out a much better quesadilla in my skillet. The secret is to weight the quesadilla down on each side so it gets a nice brown, crispiness to it. While I could get a relatively crisp quesadilla in the maker, I couldn't get the same golden brown as in my skillet. The time to make and clean was the same, and at a party, I use an electric griddle. So, this appliance just wastes space in my kitchen.
We received this as a gift, and have made great use of it. It is very easy to use: just put a tortilla on the bottom, scoop some filling (ground beef, chicken, cheese, vegetables, etc.) into the pockets, put a tortilla on top, and close the lid! It makes perfect, light-golden-brown quesadillas every time. The triangular quesadilla sections are easy to break apart and remain sealed (i.e., they don't leak the filling). We have found that it is able to make quesadillas more than fast enough to keep up with the consumption requirements of a family of four (unlike a typical waffle iron, where you are always waiting for the next one). Leftovers are great to snack on or put in a school lunch. It is extremely easy to keep clean and is very durable.
I'll admit that I was skeptical before buying this appliance. I was doing some final shopping for my first apartment, and I was questioning whether it was necessary, and whether it would take up too much counter space. Well, I decided to bite the bullet and buy it... And let me say, I'm really glad I did. This is an awesome appliance. You can make dinner quickly, and the ingredients are pretty cheap, too. Clean up is a snap. I would recommend this to anyone, but I think that 20-something broke college kids would probably get the most use out of it.
This has quickly become a family favorite at our house. It makes fun and fast meals that the whole family can enjoy. It works well and cleans up easily. Highly recommended as a gift.
