When i first heard my first REM in 1992 i was astounded with such tracks as loosing my religion and i knew from this day forward this would be the group i would follow until the day i die. Albums such as the marvelous "Automatic for the people" going up to in my opinion another brilliant Album "Up" Which i was shocked to hear critisism of as it was a close 2nd to Automatic for the people. Your now probably thinking what is he going on about! What does this have to do with "Reveal".Well infact Reveal has to be not only REMs best album but also one of the best albums of all time as it will bring your emotions out, ranging from sadness from such songs as "Disappear" and the song that overtakes everybody hurts as the Sadest song that REM have produced which is "Ill take the Rain" which will bring a tear to the eye of those who think crying is something hard to do, especially from songs, but you will be amazed to see what you can discover. Then you get songs like already should be classed as a legend in the song " Imitation of life" which is one of those types of songs that make you want to jump up and scream to the world as you are filled with happiness and joy from which this song delivers AN INSTANT CLASSIC. There are also songs like "The Lifting" Which is a spectacular song because of the fact that it is filled with the old and new of REM. All of the other songs have there each and every brilliant effect which really do bring this album to life. If you are only buying this album just for Imitation of life then you would be very wrong indeed because this song is filled with those types of songs and in my opinion even better ones which in my opinion will make this album the greatest album of the year and will be passed down as a great through all years to come So my final statement is if you are only going to buy one album this year make it this one, even if you may not have liked REM beforehand nows the chance to start this phenomena REM are delivering into the world Buy it now and i guarantee you will be amazed with what this talented and marvelous music group REM can do Buy it Now!
The songwriting on this album is phenomenal and sidesteps the cliches and forced rhyming that shows up on even some of the best lyrics by their contemporaries U2. The chorus on the haunting second to last track "I'll Take the Rain" includes a lyric as suggestive as "I used to think/as birds take wing/they sing through life/so why can't we." Consider also the lyrics on Track 4, "She Just Wants to Be" and other tracks which overflow with paeans to optimism, reinvention and accumulated wisdom. The standout tracks on this album include the dreamy, shimmering opening track, "Lifting," "All the Way to Reno," the aforementioned "She Just Wants to Be," the first single released ("Imitation of Life"), and "Chorus and the Ring," the poetical highlight of the album. Although the review above speaks of hints of Brian Wilson, there are suggestions of other musical cross-pollinations. Listen for chords and vocals which suggest Pulp and Gilbert O'Sullivan on "All the Way to Reno (You're Gonna Be a Star)," or the luxurious orchestrations of the Beach Boys's "Pet Sounds" on "Beat a Drum" and "Beachball." Be on the lookout at other times for the jangling guitars of the Byrds and the punctuated singing style of Patti Smith.
The Lifting -3.5 I've been high - 4 All the way to Reno - 4.5 ---This is in my top 3 of the album and from what i understood is going to be released as the second single a really great song, even though it might be a little to long. She just wants to be - 4 Disappear - 4.5 ---this is also in my top 3 of the album tide with All the way to Reno. I just love the way Stipe sings "the vanishing point appears..." Now i must say that the first 5 songs are trully excellent and give a superb opening to the album, from here it goes a little downhill except.... well read on! Saturn return - 2 ---this is really the only song that i really don't like in the album. Beat a drum - 3 Imitation of life - 4 --- weird, for some reason this song sounds better to me when i listen to the entire album than when i hear it as a single. Summer turns to high - 3 chorus and the ring - 3 I'll take the rain - 5 --- This is the gem of the album! this song alone is worth buying entire album.I really hope they don't release this as a single since this kind of song in my opinion should be a bonus for those who take their to listen to the album. The emotion Stipe puts into this song is amazing. Beachball - 3.5 --- even though i think that "i'll take the rain " would have been a perfect closer "beachball" is not too bad :)... Final rating --4-- If i'll take and average it will probably be worth only 3.5 but what's great about this album is that he good songs are truly great.
We wouldn't have heard this album then and what a shame it would've been. Reveal is without a doubt one of the bands best work. It is trully exceptional - a real masterpiece! I've only had it for one day and I absolutely treasure it. The sound or theme on this album is very much a mix between 'UP'(1998) and 'Automatic' (1991). The result is an atmospheric album that still has loads of guitar tunes and a very rock n' roll theme. In addition, many tracks have echoing keyboard notabaly track 2 - I've been High - my favourite so far. Micheal Stipe is great throughout and never sounded better. Most of his lyrics are sad redeeming songs but there is some joy on here too - Immitation of Life - being the big one here. The best tracks for me so far are - I've Been High - All the way to Reno - Know what she wants - Saturn Returns - Immitation of life - I'll Take the Rain Unusually on this album, it's the end that really gets me. Make no mistake, 'The Lifting' is one of the best intro tracks I've ever heard but the end is the most beautiful bit. I'll Take the Rain is a brilliant end in itself and should have been the last track. But it is followed by Beachball which is almost an equal. Two great goodbyes! What more do you want? REM is a new band for me. I've only just gotten into them - so don't think I'm some crazed fan being biased to my mentors! I just love this album for what it is. Already I love 6 tracks and that's just after a day! No track here will have you press the skip button. All of them are 4 star tunes with the ones above being 5 plus! It's slow and poetic. 54 minutes never felt so good! Pop this album into your CD player after a hard day and you'll just melt away all that tension as Stipe and Co take you all the way to Reno and back! Go and buy this new sensational album now! REM are back! |
