Return to Me
: Although this movie was entertaining and a cute romantic comedy it lacked substance. In a word it was corny. Although David Duchovny is a "hottie" and Minnie Driver is a "cuttie" I wouldn't even waste my time on it even as a video rental.
'Return to Me' never fails to put a smile on my face and a warm feeling in my heart. It is so well acted, written, filmed... you get drawn into the world these characters live in and at the end feel reluctant to leave. This movie is very real, and it puts you through an emotional rollar coaster. You are grinning happily one minute, and sobbing the next... just to get picked right back up. Its a movie that anyone can watch. Young, old or in between... everyone will enjoy it. You just don't find movies like this any more. Its one the whole family can sit down and watch together.
Absolutely! This is a smart, tightly-written, and utterly enjoyable film. We've loved Bonny Hunt for years, and were quite impressed with her directorial debut (as well as her writing -- wow!). The entire theater alternated between uncontrollable laughter and wistful sighing! No kidding. It was chock full of intelligent humor, as well as believable poignancy. Not a bit of triteness -- it was extremely fresh! Great performances by everyone. Terrific casting (we enjoyed seeing some of the former cast members of the Bonny Hunt Show). All in all, it was delightful. And, nobody can improvise like Bonny Hunt. Pretty darn great.
I make no secret of the fact that I am a David Duchovny fan, but I came to this movie a bit apprehensively; I was afraid that it would drown in sap, and indeed some of the reviews I read led me to believe that that was the case. So I waited until it was out on video before I saw it. I think it actually works better on the small screen than it would on the big screen; the small screen adds to the sense of intimacy that runs throughout the story. Duchovny first seems a bit awkward, but quickly loosens up and delivers a fine performance, one quite different from the grimly intense Mulder on "The X-Files." The movie just about force-feeds us the idea that the romance between his character and Minnie Driver's is meant to be, but they make up for it with their natural, unforced chemistry. Duchovny is one of the few actors who could deliver a line like "I ache for Grace" without looking and sounding like a fool. What woman wouldn't melt like butter in a warm skillet over this guy? Bonnie Hunt and James Belushi are the scene stealers, but they don't steal the whole movie--the gentle romance between Duchovny and Driver still manages to be the center. The sap quotient is indeed high, but if you can let go of your cynicism for a couple of hours, you will enjoy this movie.
I realize how difficult it may be to believe that someone has produced a good movie that actually does not have any sex or violence. In fact, the profanity is utilized in small measured doses to ellicit laughs. It is not used for shock value, nor is it an integral part of the characters' speech patterns. Aside from a few trite and overused plot devices this was an amazing, funny yet wholesome movie. It is very refreshing to see a good comedy that also demonstrates the warmth and caring that is so vital an ingredient in our daily lives. Kudos to everyone involved in this production! I encourage everyone to go out and see this movie at least once. Go with someone you care about. You will not be disappointed.
