Plantronics DSP-500 Digitally-Enhanced USB Gaming/Multimedia Stereo Headset and Software
: I bought this product July 5, 2002. I cannot download the Windows XP driver necessary from the Plantronics site. Sent 3-5 emails to the tech support and get little or no response.
These headphones were easy to install and have worked flawlessly so far. The sound quality is very good. The comfort level of the headphones is decent but not outstanding.
The predecessor Plantronics DSP-300 headsets were included by IBM as part of their high-end voice dictation program ViaVoice Pro USB version. This is the top of the IBM line and by far the most accurate, fastest, and best-performing voice recognition/dictation program that I have reviewed in the eight years that I have been reviewing such programs for legal automation publications. That said, there is a major degradation in the accuracy and performance of this top end software when the Plantronics headset is not used. I tried substituting a very expensive Andrea DA-400 DSP desk array microphones for the Plantronics and found that ViaVoice Pro became nearly unusable because of degraded accuracy and nonsensical recognition. When I again started using the USB Plantronics DSP headsets, ViaVoice's recognition accuracy again became outstanding. Perhaps these headsets are too expensive for casual consumers but for business users, they're excellent.
Tried to get it to work, even talked with Plantronics tech support which tried to help. Couldn't get the microphone loud enough. The volume control for the microphone was greyed out and the one in the software kept going down to medium, even though I would try and turn it up.
This has great receiving sound quality because of the microphone boom cancellation and usb digital connection to the pc. Right now it may be worth the price(I wouldn't value it more than 80$ that's for sure). IF you use it for the voice recognition, or chatting or phone calls this is great! Downsides: No EAX or 3d surround sound support. Gamers beware. Not "fantastic" if you want high quality music. For those who listen to a lot of MP3s and watch a lot of dvds, it would be better to stick to those better manufacturers such as Sennheiser for those.
