Pippin (1972 Original Broadway Cast)
: Pippin is a wondeful show. My high school is putting it one as we speak and I'm either laughing, or awestruck each and every minute. The music pulls everything together. I like every song but my favorites have to be Corner of the Sky, With You, Morning Glow and Glory. I know it's a lot but I couldn't choose. I have to say the movie version is a little odd, but if you like that stuff it's cool. Anyway if you buy this CD I can promise no disappointment!
Pippin, as I see it, is one of the worst musicals ever to be performed. I myself have seen the Broadway version, listened endlessly to the score, and have in fact performed in this awful excuse for a musical. Perhaps the most annoying aspect of this supposedly "comedic" and "fantastic" musical, is the fact that it is neither comedic nor fantastic. Pippin is a mix of boring songs and a plot line that redefines monotonous. Nothing in this dry musical makes sence, and the more you see or hear it, the less appealing it is. Don't waste your money on this awful musical. Take a listen here and find out for yourself, but take my word, it's not the kind of musical that you will want to hear again and is not worth your money. The only worth while aspect of Pippin is the choreography of the original broadway show, I believe by Bob Fosse. The movie can be rented or purchase at larger video stores with wide varieties because Pippin is not commonly in demand. It makes you scratch your head and think "What happened to Broadway?"
I saw the original show on broadway and have always remembered the experience fondly. It is a shame the preview soundtrack has the same poor quality as the CD I purchased from Amazon. On the first track, my CD skips and bounces exactly as the preview track.
Pippin is the best musical I never saw. As a young, aspiring actor and avid fan of musicals, I have implemented Pippin as a blue print for my life. The quest for self-fullfillment, combating the darker "players", and trying to find my "Corner of the Sky" has left with me an impression that can't easily be dismissed. As an actor I have faced moments of extreme self doubt, but trying and failing like Pippin (or succeeding?) would be more than most people would do. This is an incredible show, and a great recording, that won't be forgotten.
The biting satire in many of these songs will be lost if you haven't seen the play, but they're still rollicking, touching, and inspiring. These are livelier than many of the "classic" musicals, more irreverent, and yet not explicit. A great collection.
