Here are some customer reviews of Picnic :

I first saw this movie on TV as a teenager in Germany. (Not only was I fuzzy on the language, but I doubt I knew who Kim Novak was.) It had a huge impact and stuck with me, but it was when I stumbled upon it later as a young adult that I fell in love with this film. My tradition now is to watch it every Labor Day, because it perfectly captures both the bittersweet flavor of the end of summer and the small-town nostalgia of the Midwest (where I grew up). Rosalind Russell nearly steals the movie in what she describes as one of her favorite roles. Her body language alone is eloquent. The entire starring and supporting cast is superb (look for Phyllis Newman as a teenaged admirer of Holden). "Picnic" is the Labor Day equivalent of "It's a Wonderful Life"!

I will admit that this film does a good job of depicting a painfully provincial midwestern town in the 50's -- with everyone busy being violently swell. But it fails to really take flight. The music has horrible melodramatic spikes, the story suffers with implausable character development, and is frankly painful to watch. It is really a pity this film took time from Mr. Holden's life; that he could have used making a better picture. If you must see it, see it on a rental basis. Baby.

One of my favorite all time movies, but difficult to explain to some people as to why I like it.My wife understands why and that's enough.Does anyone remember what celebration Kim Novak was the queen of and what the event was (hint) something spelled backwards. However the most memorable part of the movie was William Holden and Kim Novak dancing near the river at the PICNIC to the theme song from the movie.VERY VERY SEXY How many times have you ever seen William Holden dance. Sure hope they re-release it again,I've searched all over for it with no luck.

Do you know the expression, "they just don't make movies like this any more?" This is definitely the case with PICNIC. A little bit of Americana is captured in this 50s classic of a young girl's awakening to romantic love. A small town's warmth and charm is somehow stirred by a stranger's arrival (Bill Holden) and somehow life will never be the same. Colors are vibrant, the characters are real, you almost wish you were at the picnic enjoying the festivities. Make PICNIC a part of your classic's collection.

I first saw this movie with my parents as an 8 year old wide-eyed kid. There are several interesting points about this motion picture: 1. William Holden has his best performance ever as Hal Carter, a drifter and charmer in the small midwestern town of Hutchenson Kansas 2. Cliff Robertson makes a spectacular debut as the "Rich Kid Next Door" and cannot believe that anyone can ever spoil his world of power, money and romance. 3. Rosalind Russell is simply fantastic as the over-the hill old maid still searching for love and feeling like she is younger than she really is. 4. Suzan Strasberg is stunning as the younger daughter of Betty Field and a book-worm turned boy-lover with the charm of William Holden. 5. Kim Novak has the plum role in this motion picture. She realizes that love is more than security and being told that she is "pretty." 6. Betty Field is the real star of the picture. As the mother of two daughters, she struggles trying to keep her oldest daughter from making the same mistakes that she made. 7. Arthur O'Connell has a great supporting role as a batchelor who finally realizes that time has run out on him.

If you have a great love of 50's motion pictures, this is a must see film of Josh Logan.
