: I highly recommend this album...the dvd that comes with it is mad cool. I just love just about every song on it!
The Roots new album Phrenology is the real deal. No hip hop group has it together like The Roots. They combine elements of all different types of music that create a sound that is purely original with no equal. Black Thought's flow is amazing and the group holds it down as they remain the only hip hop group to successfully hold down their own music. The Seed is an amazing song and its vibe is a new style of rock, r&b, hip hop, soul and funk. I didn't think they could do it for the fifth time with this album but they did it. This is the best one yet, even better than illadelph halflife.
Phrenology is simply fantastic. But keep in mind, the Roots are not your average hip-hop band. First off all, they are terrific musicians. Secondly, there is a message in their music. Third, they have no need for the braggadocious "bling-bling" that gives hip-hop such a bad name these days. Standout songs on Phrenology: The Seed, Break You Off, and Complexity. If you are already a Roots fan, this album will not disappoint. But note that Phrenology has it's own vibe, not as fun-loving as "Do You Want More", but not as brooding as "Illadelph Halflife".
if only i had the gift of words that these boys do. and what could have been a better title? phrenology being the study of characterization, the roots bring it up and touch all aspects of personality, with lyrics that make you think and beats that leave you stepping in time when walking down the street. for all of you missing the old school or rap and hip hop, (ie the days when music mattered, lyrics had meaning that the public wasn't ready to hear and a sound that is new and constantly in development) this is your salvation! if you are looking for the radio hip hop and the typical sounds, you will like this alright, but the real appreciation is in the recognition of the amazing talent. seed 2.0 has the most amazing beats that compliment the voices that you would never get from any other group. and water is unreal; the end is a bit creepy, especially when your first listen is shaking the windows.
Phrenology is the most amazing cd i have ever owned. This is by far the best cd The Roots have ever put out....right up there with Do You Want More?!?!?!??!!, Things Fall Apart, and Illadelph Halflife. The unique blend of several different styles of music is what seperates The Roots from everyone else in the hip-hop scene. With several featuring artists including the up and coming rock and roll artist Cody Chesnutt, Musiq, Jill Scott, The Jazzyfatnasses and Nelly Furtado, Phrenology has created a fusion of mainstream popular music with underground soul. With inspirational tracks (i.e. Sacrifice), stories of love (Break You Off, Complexity), and attacks on negative influences in society (Pussy Galore), The Roots have created one of the greatest masterpieces in hip-hop history. Phrenology will without a doubt rank among the greatest hip-hop albums ever produced. GO BUY IT NOW.
