Here are some customer reviews of Phonics Writing Desk :

My father bought this toy for my four year old son's birthday. It is the best toy I've seen out there for teaching children their ABC's and to read 3 letter words and write them. It has several levels of learning fun and the kids love it! I love it too because it also encourages children to make up their own words and won't pronounce words that may sound inappropriate. When they designed this toy, they thought of EVERYTHING! I Highly recommend it!!

My 4 year old really liked this toy. She immediately started writing quite a few of the letters, which surprised me since she had been refusing to try for some time. I think that this toy is a great idea because it allows kids to feel like they've accomplished the writing on their own. Unfortunately, the erase button for the writing screen broke two days after we got it. I have sent it back but don't know yet whether or not I'll get a refund. I would still recommend this toy, though. It even gives you the option to work on small or capital letters.

While this toy seems very useful, parents are advised that children should be learning how to spell and write lower case letters BEFORE they learn the capital letter symbols. When children read books or see words in print in most places, they will NOT see words printed in all capital letters. The younger the children, the more important it is to learn first words in lower case letters because that will transfer more quickly to reading words in books. Unfortunately, most of the toys offered of this kind only provide practice with capital letters.

Because it's marked "3-7 years" and becasue the other reviews sounded good, we bought this for our five year old. Mistake! Our child was not interested. The toy is really geared to much younger children (maybe ages 3 or early 4?). Our child was bored with it right out of the package, and it was way less than educational for this age group. We tried to give it away, but the other kids we knew didn't like it, either. (They were all older 4s and younger 5s.) Warning: This is a waste of money for 5 and up.

This toy was an enjoyable gift for my daughter who is currently engrossed in learning to write her letters and spell anyhow and likes toys with buttons in general. My only complaints are that the toy often turns itself off before she has a chance to complete writing her word-it does not really provide enough time for a beginning writer to complete this task. Also it talks to her non-stop while she is working on it which she finds annoying.
