Philips DVP642 DivX-Certified Progressive-Scan DVD Player
: Probably the best DVD/DivX player for the money. Definetely not the best DVD player over all. It looks a little bit cheap, lacks buttons on front panel, remote is awkward, system menus lack functionality and glamour of other makes. Sound on all DivX's I played on out-of-the-box player was out of sync. Problem was solved by installing new firmware from Philips. Be prepared to have fun after you installed new firmware. Player switches to PAL and it takes some time to switch it back to NTSC. This player is not the best choice for non-tech-savvy people.
I needed a multi region player and entering a simple code one time did the trick. It now will recognize every region and every format and play it flawlessly. Great slim design at a price you can't beat.
Great player for the price ($66.00). Played everything I threw on it. Has a optical digital output and the resolution is also great. Highly recommended.
Sure the remote is kinda crappy, but it has a lot to do with the fact that it has to work within a file structure that might contain several divx files. i love this item so far.
I do not agree with the other person that this one is the best player. It lacks few features. Suppose, basic things...no play, pause, rew, fwd buttons on the player. Then if you stop the DVD, it won't start again from that scene, it will start from the very beginning, which is not a good idea to fwd all the way to that particular scene where you stopped! It doesn't "Resume" from that scene. The best thing is it can read Dvix! NOT ALL Divx! Sometimes it takes time to read the disc & the whole player start to shake/vibrate like a cell phone! To me it is a good player among Divx players in the market. The price is very reasonable in some stores, Wal-Mart is selling in few stores $69.99 and also available online store. Target is also taking the same price. This is gonna be my extra player just to run my few hundreds Divx movies and Pioneer(DV 333) would be my primary DVD player for the DVDs!
