Here are some customer reviews of
Phantom Moon
: First of all, what many people don't realize is that this release is a bit of a side-project for Duncan. The lyrics were written by a playwright friend of Duncan's (Steven Sater). Knowing that this album is not exactly the follow-up to "Humming", he published "Phantom Moon" on a smaller record label. That being said, I really like this album a lot. Duncan presents a fairly somber sound, and strips the arrangements down to their bare essentials of guitar, piano, and strings (as opposed to the lush layering of "Humming.") But it still has the unique musical inspiration that only Duncan Sheik can provide. "Phantom Moon", like the albums before it, provides beauty, complexity, and introspection. It is not the best introduction to Duncan Sheik, but it is essential for any true fan. By the way, if you are looking for some more new material by Duncan, look for the following non-album songs: "View from the Other Side", "Now or Never", "Wishful Thinking", "Someone You Need", "Songbird".
I am a fairly new fan of Duncan Sheik's so I recently went out and bought his new CD. I found the songs to be so compelling and heartfelt that after going home and listening to the CD, I ran back out to the record store and bought concert tickets for an upcoming show of his. This CD is truly divine. Steven Sater's lovely writing combined with Duncan's silky smooth voice make for a real listening treat. And I like how Duncan digs up some country roots in many of the tracks. This CD is like a breath of fresh air in today's pop-congested music scene. Duncan rocks and I can't wait to see him live!!!
Personally, I enjoyed his last two releases much more than this one. While being a decent listen, it didn't impact me the same way the other albums did. I'm feeling dissapointed having bought this album. Maybe if I listen to it a few more times, it will grow on me.
as with past albulms, duncan brings out honesty and integrity in a music world saturated with meaningless lyrics. he is a true musician and phantom moon is firm evidence that he continues to explore his creative realm. for real duncan fans, check out (website). beautiful site with history, bio, lyrics...
It's a miracle that music this subtle and sublime can still get released in todays clamorous market, but there it is. This is artistry that makes demands on the listener, it is literate, profound and sincere, which is unfortunately completely unfashionable. Duncan is a maveric, finding complex new approaches to the accoustic guitar that leave me breathless. Buy this if you want to live in a world where real artistry is still viable.
