Here are some customer reviews of Once :

This CD is awesome! I love it! It might never leave my Cd player. I'm hoping that Nightwish will become big in the U.S. That would rock!OK so here are my song reviews.
1. Dark Chest of Wonders- Awesome pick for the first song. Heavy with some great lyrics.10 Stars.
2. Wish I had an Angel- I don't know why I love this song so much but I do. 10 stars!
3. Nemo- This is it. Can't get any better than this. 10!
4. Planet Hell- sounds like it's off the Van Helsing soundtrack for anyone who's familiar with the movie. Great song, awesome lyrics. 10
5.Creek Mary's Blood- I like this one. Right here, Tuomas' favorite song. I understand why. 10.
6. The Siren- Ok, not my favorite. I like it, but I need to listen to it a little bit more to get used to it.8 stars
7.Dead Gardens- I like this one a lot, must likely because of the lyrics. 10
8. Romanticide- Not even bothering I love the heavy sound 10
9.Ghost Love Score- This is it. The best song ever! Tuomas I salute you for this one. 10 minutes of the best song ever.
10.Can't spell it- Ok, I know. I cannnot spell the title of this song. It's all in Finnish. It's pretty, but not metal.9
11. Higher Than Hope- Written by Marco, I was completely impressed, until I found out that Tuomas helped too. MArco did do most of it though. I have nothing agaisnt either of them, in case it sounded like I did. I love them both.10
12. White Night Fantasy- Hmm. This one I'm not sure of yet. I like it, but I'm going to have to listen to it more. 8
13.Live to Tell the Tale- Yep, Awesome. Glad it's on there. 10

All in all In love this Cd.Musical perfection and it doesn't get any better than this. All of you who do not like them, all I have to tell you is that they are here to stay!!!

Ok,i have a problem with a couple of the reviews.First of all "david bowie" i'm not sure what part of the world you're from and i don't have any kids but if i did and they had at least half the good taste to be listening to this,I would be rather proud.Where i'm from(the U.S.A.) most 13 year old's are listening to some force fed pop junk like britney spears or even worse some awful rap stuff. If you are the REAL david bowie all i have to say is at a very young age mtv shoved your awful "lets dance" video down my throat every 2 hours.......

Ok, so I have been a nightwish fan for some time now, and I currently own all of their albums. This one mixes both heavy(more then there other albums) with the beauty of tarja's singing. Like others have said, if you have not heard nightwish before, and are a new listener, don't get this album first. I would suggest going with Wishmaster or even Angels Fall First. Back on subject, I enjoy pretty much every song on this album, with the exception of Romanticide. Some songs that stand out are, Dark Chest of Wonders, Nemo, Planet Hell, and Ghost Love Score. I do not know where they were going with Wish I Had An Angel(the whole techno part was a little confusing), but seeing them live makes them even that much better. If you are a fan of Nightwish, I would suggest you pick up this album, and if possible, see them live, cause they are so much better live. Oh yes, my one disappointment. I am disappointed taht the US release was under Road Runner Records, because I dont think they fit in with the whole Nu Metal scene at all. But its ok, because we got the album here, and that is all that matters. Definate Solid 5 for me, along with all of there other cds :D

The blockbuster sound and totally unique and innovative sounds that this band created on albums like Wishmaster and Century Child is now a signature, and each time Nightwish puts out a new release, I always expect something earth shattering, something that pushes the envelope further. Not so with Once, though. It is vintage Nightwish. Tarja has never sounded better, the woman is a miracle of modern vocal presentations. Other than Floor Jansen, there is no one else with the range, immaculate precision, and depth of this woman; She is angelic.

This recording is well written, and performed, but not groundbreaking the way many of their earlier albums were. Not all recordings can be as significant as some of their others, where they were clearly inventing a new sound. My personal opinion is that the material was tailored to the more commercially acceptable side of the band's writing and performing style, and rightfully so, as they are having a commercial breakthrough, which is great for the whole genre. They are one of the few BIG acts in symphonic metal.

It is without a doubt more metalic in its symphonic landscape, but not to the detriment of the melodious flair that they always have.

I do like this record, for me though, it does not reach out and grab me by the throat the way many of their other collections have. I'm definitely not lamenting that "the earlier stuff was better", as I always like to follow skilled and creative musicians down a path when they are changing. Maybe thats what's missing for me here, the growth in songwriting and outrageous sounds and passages (although it is present on 'The Siren', and to some extent in Ghost Love Score). But despite all my ramblings, this is still vintage Nightwish, solid, beautiful, bombastic, symphonic, and nearly perfect.

I have been a Nightwish follower for a little over 1 year now. Since then I have purchased all of their albums before this one and saw them in their very first US concert tour. Nightwish is awesome plain and simple. This album is awesome plain and simple. The sound is a fresh new look at the potential of what heavy metal can and should be. Not dark and depressing but beautiful and inspirational. Thanks to Tarja's amazing vocals and the muscial ability of Tumos and the band...Nightwish has it all. The songs are great but still this is not the album to start with if you're first hearing about this group. 'Once'is pretty much an Americanized version of Nightwish using alot more hard and heavy guitar and alot more male vocals. (not that there is anything wrong with that) Still, songs like 'Ghost Love Score'and 'Creek Mary's Blood'is the old school sound that Nightwish began with and turned into classics such as 'Elvenpath', 'The Riddler' and 'Dead Boy's Poem' However the album is great and thanks to Roadrunner Nightwish now has the ability to grab a whole new bunch of mainstreem fans (I'm talking to all you Slipknot, Soulfly and Type-O-Negative fans!)Welcome to America Nightwish we are glad you're here.
