Here are some customer reviews of
O.C.M.S.
: This new release from The Crows is great. It seems to be a bit more laid back than thier previous recordings, but still in the same spirit. O.C.M.S. has some great original tunes like "Big Time in the Jungle" that are pretty darn good. Thier arrangements on songs such as "Wagon Wheel" are personalized and very cool. Anyone who enjoys folk, bluegrass, traditional Appalachian music, or just high energy, fun music will love this recording (or anything else by The Old Crow Medicine Show.)
These guys will awe you. It was so good that I couldn't help but to laugh in spite of myself. The music and energy they projected was incredible. I saw them a couple of weeks ago at a show in Tennessee. It was a private farm, rolling hills, thick tall timber. I had no idea what was in store for me. They ripped up the front porch of that farmhouse with melodies and sheer, uninhibited enthusiasm. Wave after wave of mind blowing tunes, punctuated by the delight of plain old unselfconscious getting down, blasted me to a new level of musical appreciation. They were broadcasting that night, not with a weak radio antenna, but with music. You couldn't get with earshot of the porch without feeling a buzz. That was some powerful stuff.
The night couldn't have been better either, cold with a huge bonfire, a blanket of stars, and the best group of friends you could ever hope to be around. No one was a stranger. Who could have been, really? I kept thinking, where was the rest of the world? Did they know about this? And if so, why weren’t they here? What do I have to do to get more? I'm hooked, I'm a junkie. I need my next fix.
I feel I was let in on something that night, something very special. Standing around the bonfire, a guy told me, "A ray of light follows these guys." And I swear it does. If you can't see it, feel it, taste it like the twang from tinfoil in your mouth, then your dead, that’s all there is to it. They will lift you and you won't come down for weeks, perhaps a part of you never will.
Buy their CD, get a taste, because that's all it is, a sip. Go to the source and sate yourself, there's an abundance. Thanks Old Crow, I'll see you at Jazz Fest.
These guys are still one of my favorite bands, but I agree with an earlier review that Nashville has really damaged this group. I'm sure this is going to be a hit record, but the album buying public will never know how good this band has been in the past. The energy of their live show and other albums is completely missing. Those of you who've never heard this band should definately buy this. However,if you're and old fan, you should be in mourning. Goodbye Old-Time Punk, hello O'Brother. Can't blame record exec's for wanting to make a buck.
This is easily one of the best CDs I own. Their sound is difficult to describe. Some here have described it as old time country, bluegrass, jug band or outlaw country and I suppose each of those descriptions would be accurate. The first thing I noticed when listening is the harmony, these guys sound great singing together. They have a very unique sound that you never grow tired of listening to. I can't recomend this CD highly enough. I hope they release a new CD soon.
I eagerly anticipated these guys' first studio release in a couple of years (last year's live album is very good). For the most part, I'm not disappointed, since I really think OCMS has a lot to offer. But, if you've ever been lucky enough to catch the group live, this album is like a collection of their slowest, lowest energy songs. Don't get me wrong - I think "Take 'Em Away" and "Wagon Wheel" are amazing, but I miss a bunch of their real up-tempo material. Live, these guys nearly explode; here, they just burn steadily, with the occasional flare-up. Bottom line - a good album, well worth buying, but I agree with earlier posts - if you can get your hands on their earlier albums (try their website?), do so!
