Here are some customer reviews of Now :

When you think an artist will hit a slump, Maxwell proves you wrong. The ladies will definately love this CD.

..I had no choice.

I am overwhelmingly disappointed with this Album. I was riding his jock, big time, and still do, but not because of NOW. This is a stretch for me because I don't like 99% of the male R&B singers out there.

I told ... folks... that Maxwell was special.

Well he is-but not on THIS ALBUM. I'm really looking at this brother sideways right about now. Here's why:

1. Loss of the surrealness from Embrya. ("Drown Deep") Not as bad as a lot of the radio R&B, but still pretty shallow and incoherent.

2. Loss of the funkiness from UHS. ("Sweet Lady") C'mon, you said you were gonna use Wah Wah Watson more on this album. Did someone hit the "mute" button on the rhythm guitar track? I'm lost. I think he's only on like 1 song. Why?

Now these are just examples, but neither of these two releases sounded like anything that was coming out of the diaspora of R&B music, which was a blessing from the Almighty himself. But NOW sure does. I'm so mad at him that I may just go and listen to some Andreas Vollenweider to calm my nerves.

Except for "Womans Work", "Lifetime", and "Get To Know You" the rest of it sounds strangely like a lot of the ...[stuff] that turned me away from contemporary R&B in the first place.

Some observations.

-What's up with the percussion tracks? Can we say "drum machine" hell. There's a feature on Sequencers called "Quantization". I wish they had used it. The drums were lagging like my daughter with her shoe laces untied, not to mention they were lame and elementary. 1/8 note repetitions on the muted high hat on damn near every song. Whazzupwitdat? Did they not synchronize the channels?

-Why the juvenile lyrics? C'mon, Maxwell, what have you been doing, bruh, listening to Keith Sweat albums? Give me a break.

I have at least another page of complaints, but had to try to make this as concise as possible. I'm gonna compress and burn some of Maxwells stuff onto a compilation CD. It will be all of UHS, all of Embrya and 3 songs from this album.

None of this takes away from my love of this man. He is Marvin, Otis, Sam Cooke, and David Ruffin all rolled into one.

Can you say this about ANY male R&B artist in the past decade? (Other than Luther) I seriously doubt it.

Have a Peachy Day!

Maxwell's new album Now is the ultimate bad Cd. I picked t up today and I really enjoyed it. This guy is the baddest singer out today, he's mellow, funky, and hip. I would recommend this Cd to anyone who really enjoys hip hop, urban music.

I discovered Maxwell about 4 years ago (Urban Hang Suite) on a rainy Sunday afternoon whilst drinking coffee in a cafe in Nottingham - England, watching raindrops running down the steamy window and I was blown away by his smooth-mellow grooves. This new album (Now) simply oozes with polished sensuality. Maxwell's emotional rendition of This Womans Work made me cry. Maxwell is, in my opinion, the smoothest, most soulful, most polished artist around currently - purrrrfect music music to make love to in a city. (Kevan R Matthews - Nottingham, England)

I know a lot of us were disappointed with "EMBRYA", the second CD from Maxwell...BUT I have to let everyone know that this artist has come back with a vengeance. Maxwell shows off his versatility as an artist with such songs as "Temporary Nite" and "Now at the Party", both of which have a jazzy/neo-soul feeling to them. Then he slows it down perfectly with ballads such as "Changed" and "Was My Girl". There is definitely something for everyone on this CD.
