Not One Less
: Yimou is one of the best directors I love. In this film, I've learned how poverty evokes people's wisdom, perseverance, and treasuring objcets very common to us far from the third world. The 13-year-old substitute teacher, quite innocent and inexperienced, even herself not well-educated and qualified, "taught" pupils without definite textbooks. She was not afraid of being insulted that she had Chang hui-ko read Chang Ming-shian's diary. By this, she asked Chang hui-ko to apologize for the destroyed chalk. Even if Chang hui-ko was so naught and untamed, she was determined to find him back, when informed that he dropped out only because he had to make a living for his family. Maybe in the very beginning it was just because of the 60 dollars. However, to collect money for tickets to town, she seemed to give a math class for the pupils. Who knows that teachers usually learn more than students do in a class! Yimou, I'll never miss any of your films.
Whoa....several scenes in this movie got to me. They will to you too. Thats what the movies are for. This one makes a powerful social statement.
I'm originally a Chinese-decent, so maybe that's why Not One Less had made such a significant impact on me. The film is high-spirited; the characters/actors are commonly uncommon, and beautifully rendered - they will move you! See the film, and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
This is a very affecting film, one that draws you into school life in rural China and involves you directly in the travails of a young temporary teacher, only a few years older than her pupils. American educators with their PhDs, their unions and their billion dollar annual school budgets could benefit from watching this film to learn something about the basic art of teaching children.
I love this movie so much. The actress and every supporting actor on this film isn't superstar, that make this film so common film. You can find the story on this film everywhere on earth. This is the film that Hollywood can't do it. But If every Filmmaker on this earth make the film like NOT ONE LESS. I think this world is lovely earth.
