Not All Who Wander Are Lost
: Chris has put out one of the best acoustic albums in years. I haven't enjoyed an album this much since Bela, Edgar and Jerry teamed up with Sam Bush and Mark O'Connor on "Telluride Sessions." Chris is both a talented writer and musician, and I hope we hear more from him in the near future.
Much better than "This Side". Maybe there is some hope for Nickel Creek after all.
I have loved music as long as I've been alive. I've studied it, played it, and I constantly listen to it. I have a cousin who is a "boy wonder" with the fiddle. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, along comes Chris Thile and knocks my socks off. Incredible talent, wonderful music! Many of the pieces present challenging timing and unexpected chord progressions, others are just an out-and-out foot-stomping joy ride. If you can't handle non-traditonal bluegrass-style music, this is not the CD for you. If you have a more adventurous spirit, it will not disappoint. I spend a lot of time making glass beads in a torch. I listen to Bela Fleck's "Drive" during every torch session. Chris's "Not All Who Wander..." has just been added to the top of the music stack.
In this brilliant hour of music, Chris Thile easily takes his seat on his throne as king of the mandolin. Reluctant to stay attatched to any one genre too long, Thile plays musical hopscotch while leaving little to be desired in the realm of continuity. Each song serves as a chapter in a greater book setting without losing the feeling of each song's individuality flow. This, combined with musical virtuosity and innovation, and the company of acoustic music's finest, make Not All Who Wander Are Lost the elite instrumental performance in years; perhaps of all time. Undoubtably a safe investment for anyone who loves acoustic music and wishes to grow as musician.
Although you may wonder about the title of this album, the sounds that this former child prodigy makes on his mandolin will leave you in awe. He strikes gold yet again with his third CD release from Sugar Hill records. With former Nickel Creek band members, Sara and Sean Watkins, you can't go wrong with this album. He expresses the true meaning of being a musician with his wide variety in music. This album will leave ears happy no matter what type of music you prefer. From bluegrass to jazz, celtic to rock, Thile covers it all. He truely deserves the name he has given himself over the years. This is a must have for musicians and listeners of every type of music.
