Here are some customer reviews of
Norton Systemworks 2006 Premier
: After installing the product suite, even trying to limit the background and startup options, performance of my P4 240Ghz with 384 MB RAM was noticeably degraded. The final straw was when I tried to play my favorite pinball game (several years old, and never a problem before), and the ball would frequently jump or stutter, accompanied by a flurry of hard disk activity.
Norton (actually, Symantec), which long ago had a reputation for good support, now seems to offer no support at all, other than pay-per-minute phone support, and a knowledge base which returns out-of-date and mostly irrelevant answers. I could find no place on their support site to submit a question or even suggest that the problem be looked into.
I uninstalled the entire product, and retried the pinball game, and it ran perfectly.
Then I reinstalled, deselecting everything except AntiVirus. There was some degradation on the pinball again, but not to the level of the full suite. Annoying, but I can live with it.
Next year, I will get AntiVirus standalone, or maybe try one of their virus protection competitors.
I am very disappointed with Nortron SystemWorks 2006-Premier and here's why:
I spend almost $50.00 on that utility, installed it, updated it, and everything went fine, until I ran the utility. The Express clean utility that is an integral part of that software does not work. I went to Symantec knowledge Base for help, no hint to what to do. I contacted Symantec email support service. I received an auto reply that a technician will get back with me between 48 to 72 hours. Almost a week passed, no one from Symantec answered my request for technical support.
I understand that software can have glitches, bugs, etc...; this is ok, if the glitches can be patched, and the bugs can be fixed thru updates. However, paying $50.00 for a product and not being able to get support by email is a rip off.
Don't be fooled by the "extra features" that Symantec added to SystemWorks 2006, like the "check it Diagnostics". Symantec added useless utilities from another company that they probably acquired.
I decided to use Iolo's system Mechanics Professional. I am very impressed with this utility. The features that Iolo's System Mechanics have are far more superior to Nortron SystemWorks. For example, the uninstaller that Iolo's System Mechanics has, not only it can uninstall a program completely, but it also, deletes all trace of that program from your computer, and that includes all keys and references. Iolo's System Mechanics is packed with useful utilities, and each one of them accomplishes a useful task in keeping my system at peak.
A final thought, if you are using an old version of Nortron SystemWorks, and it works fine; do not waste your money to upgrade to their 2006 version; like I did.
WHEN INSTALLING, USE THE "CUSTOM OPTION". DO NOT INSTALL NORTON GOBACK!!! Like the other user, I was suckered into buying this right away due to the rebates that virtually made this a free product.
1) After I initially installed System Works Premier (2006), my system crawled. 2) After I rebooted, my initial hard drive never worked again; my files were still there, but the Master Boot Record, or whatever was corrupted. As the other user said, none of the Norton (web-site) remedies worked. 3) I had to buy a new hard drive, make that my primary and use my initial hard drive as the secondary. 4) I had to download (via another computer) the Host disk driver for my computer's motherboard - because Windows wouldn't recognize any of my hard drives.
5) I subsequently had to reinstall Windows, and all my software, then copy my data files from the original hard drive onto the new hard drive. 6) I did install System Works Premier onto my new hard drive, but used the CUSTOM option and UNCHECKED Norton GoBack. All the other utility programs worked great (Norton Ghost, Utilities, Anti-Virus, etc.).
I really wonder if Peter Norton still works there; I've used Norton Products since the DOS days, this is the first time it wiped out my hard drive (again via Norton GoBack). DON'T INSTALL NORTON GOBACK!!!!!!!
I have used Norton products since the MSDOS days, and this is the first time I've ran into such poor execution and support. Usually I
can load a Symantec product and have nothing but good results.
DO NOT USE GoBACK... make sure you do a custom install and avoid GoBack. My mistake was trusting Symantec, and had to rebuild my whole machine... many hours, days wasted. Their Tech Support, if you can call it that, is non existent.
Once you've installed it it freezes your machine when it trys to boot.
GoBack should be called Go to H*ll
I would give this a -5 if I could.
I would recommend NOT installing GoBack! (In order to NOT install GoBack, you must do a custom install and deselect GoBack.)
Just like another reviewer, I installed NSW Premier with disasterous results. GoBack messed up ALL drives (not just the system drive) so that the PC would not boot (endless boot loop), and a secondary disk was unreadable. I could find no way to uninstall GoBack once the system was corrupted, even after checking the Symantec website. There was no simple utility on the System Recovery CD to check for and uninstall GoBack!!!???!!! I could not believe it. Luckily, I had the drives backed up, but I had to completely rebuild the entire system!
NSW has not changed / improved for nearly five years. While I respect the Symantec Antivirus s/w, NSW is in need of a massive overhaul. Symantec has not invested in these utilities and it shows. Don't waste you money on this product, find a better utilities package.
