Mind, Body & Soul
: The Lady can sing, but this cd sounds like everything that is out by beautifully voiced women today, nothing musically original.
This artist has unique style!! I saw the movie "Alfie" and recognized her voice, got the CD and was so thankful she sounded nothing like the 10 other singing-impaired POP stars out there!! Her songs weren't severly repetitious or gimmicky. The rhythmic beats and accompaniments kept me listening and never skipped any song. This is music, who cares about nationality...race or whether the reflection of her voice is slightly the same...that's the point SHE is great and it sounds so great - you want that unmistakable, instantly recognizable sound!!!
This CD is incredible! I loved the Soul Sessions CD and waited for months for this to come out and it was well worth the wait. I can say that I am a pop music fan but something about Joss pulls me into her hypnotic voice. I love this CD and am now waiting for the 3rd one.
Mind Body & Soul is one of those recordings that leaves you wishing you'd never wasted the money, and probably won't, again. There's no doubt Joss has an amazing voice, but does she have a manager or a producer with any sense at all? If she did, most of these tracks would have been saved for an album titled: Mad At Parents & Family. This album has its highlights (You Had Me, Security, Sleep Like A Child), but the downside is you'll be left with the impression that her parents have no buisness telling her what to do, and who cares? In the liner notes, which read like War & Peace, she even calls them f*%&king crazy - but she loves them. In addition, her brother seems to have lost his mind - via a 'secret' 15th track on the US version (following an extended silence). It seems this poor guy is really a mess, but he's still her brother. The long silence preceeding the song made me think she was afraid he might hear it, and then pull her pigtails or break her Spice Girls cd. Maybe it would have been safer leaving it off the album - 'hiding' it didn't keep ME from hearing it. Her brother might be just too messed up to find it, though.
I have no idea what her family life is like, and I'm not interested. This album makes Joss sound like the kind of naive, angry, spoiled little teenager you may have living next door... The one who makes you feel sorry for her parents. My advice is that unless you just LOVE listening to a complaining teenager giving you HER opinion of how it's going to be, let this recording go by. Wait for the next one, and hopefully somebody won't let her do her own songwriting on it. A few years down the road, she may be mature enough to both write and perform, but right now, whether she wants her or not, I think she needs her mommy.
I must say this cd is really really good. Her first cd "Soul sessions" was aiight but this one is probably the best pure soul cd have bought in years. For all the Soul Brothers and Sisters, this is definitely a must have. I wasn't feelin her first single "you had me" cus it sounded alittle pop to me but after listening to her whole whole CD on AOL...I had to rush out today to get this incredible cd.
My favorite songs on here so far are
Spoiled( first heard this song on an urban radio before the cd came out and it blew me away....best song on the cd)
Jet lag, dont cha wanna ride, less is more( got a root rock reggae feel), security, young at heart, killin Time. Ok now i've got to go and listen some more....might have more favorites.
