Emiliana Torrini reminds me a bit of Bjork, with a splattering of Hooverphonic's Geike Arnaert and Ramin of Supreme Beings of Leisure thrown in for good measure. Oh and of course can't forget about Iceland's own ice princess Bjork. What the listener has here is the catchy melodies of pop music blended with the icy smooth beats of trip hop. With tracks like "Wednesday's Child" and "Baby Blue" one can't help but sing along to the songs. Albeit short the album nevertheless is flawless with its melodic songs. Trip hop fans can't do no wrong with this album.
That said, I like the songs that did *not* remind me of anyone else. I'd count about 4 or 5 songs that suggested real talent and a unique style. Are you reading, Emiliana? Be yourself.
To Be Free: Her most popular song. It's got a really good beat and her voice is smooth throughout. Wednesday's Child: This song is a little bit different. But the organs and celestial sounds make it really nice. Baby Blue: This is the first song with heavy guitars. It's not my favorite song on the album, but it's still pretty good. Dead Things: This song is really cool. It starts out really slow, but then it has this really loud crazy part in the middle. I really enjoy it. Unemployed in Summertime: This is a really upbeat and happy song. It just reminds you of the happiness and liesure of youth. Easy: My second favorite song on this album. The electronic sounds and acoustic guitar mesh well with her voice. It's another happy song and it just flows really "Easy." Fingertips: Not my favorite song, but her voice is really sweet in this song. It's a slow song that isn't hard on the ears. It's a nice little song. Telepathy: My favorite song on the CD! It's the heaviest song on the CD and Emiliana really sings out. Her voice like pierces my heart during the chorus. The melody in the chorus is really different. I can listen to this song over and over again. Tuna Fish: A nice little jazzy tune about the simplicity of life. I know the name is weird, but if you listen to the whole song it makes sense. I really like it. Summerbreeze: A truly beautiful song. Another acoustic guitar song. This is the ballad song of the CD and it's just great. Sea People: A short song that brings an end to a great CD. Buy the CD. I really enjoy it and I can't wait until her next album comes out.
This CD is almost perfect, the songs are gentle and would make anybody smile but just listening to them... Can't go wrong with this one... This is real "trip-pop" :o) |
