I've been up and down the marriage rollercoaster, but we wont get into that. I dont care much for receiving help, let alone reading SELF-help. This LOVE SMART book has been surprisingly refreshing. It reads really easy and has very supporting words of advice. I dont watch the Dr. Phil show but I am definetly going to continue reading this. It has a bright, slice of life feel to it. I am impressed with LOVE SMART. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY on this book. While it bills itself as a pioneering take on the world of dating for women, it falls far short of offering anything new. The first part of the book tells readers that if they're unhappy about being single (still), it's their own fault. I find this popular take insulting and less than helpful, just like most of the dating books out there. Dr. P insists that self esteem is what you need to locate a mate: your married friends have it and you don't. The second part of the book tells readers how to train men. "You need to teach a man this and this and put the dots close together because he won't get it otherwise." Pretty insulting to men if you ask me. The remainder of the book reads like a combination fortune cookie and self-serving resume for Dr. P, and it gets old fast. IF YOU WANT TO READ SOMETHING BETTER, TRY "WITH OR WITHOUT A MAN" OR "WHY THERE ARE NO GOOD MEN LEFT," the latter is by Barbara Whitehead of the National Marriage Project. Both those books are by women for women and acknowledge the real challenges that no TV talk show 50-something man could ever (not with any amount of vicarious experience through his clients)articulate. I used to actually like the guy and watch his show, but after this shameful insult to women and men, I cannot watch any more. SAVE YOUR MONEY!! I am almost finished with the book and I have had it LESS THAN 24 HOURS! The first chapters are centered around YOU. After each chapter I finished, I feel like I have a boost of confidence in myself. This book gets better and better! I know that Dr. Phil can help me, help myself! I was thinking about purchasing this book but after reading the reviews it seems to be more aimed at women. I am 35 years old and told by most women (usually ones that are my mothers age how handsome I am). But, I just have no luck with women. I have a college education and I am a gentleman. I like to travel and have many life experiences worth noting. I just wanted to read what Dr. Phil had to say goes on womens heads. Why if you're a nice guy and get overlooked all the time. While some women feel it is a feather in there cap to try to change some jerk that is unchangeable, but if they bag a descent guy they drop them for some jerk? Dr. Phil is one of my all-time favorite pop-culture heroes. He gives excellent advice to families and those in trouble and need. Now, he gives the singles of the world his advice which, as usual, is right-on. In this book, he tells us how we can find the one we want but, more importantely, which direction to take. He's great about giving advice that is not only valid, but really helps a person take charge of their lives. Without hesitaion, I recommned this book to all singles. Even if you don't care for his TV show, you can get a lot of good stuff out of this book. Along with it, I'd say there are a few other good books out there for dating, including "Why Men Love Bitches" and "Man Magnet."
