: As a fellow vocalist, I listen with an extra discerning ear, and what I have found on this C.D. is absolute pleasure. While it seems one-dimensional, Diana is truly mesmerizing. I can listen to this from start to finish and that says alot. Diana deserves all of the fame and accolades the general public have bestowed upon her. Her detractors are just envious. Keep at it!
Man! I was channel surfing (half-asleep) and came upon a Studio 54 session with Diana. Talks about luck. I had never heard of her before this, but when I surfed by, I immediately perked up and stopped right THERE! I knew I was onto something special. Now, I don't care what you call it (my tastes are eclectic), but I know what I like and I LIKED it. No... I loved it! And I'm not alone. Just days later (after I rushed out and bought the album) I went to a store that was displaying a widescreen TV, and just happened to be showing the high-def HBO loop of the Newport Jazz Fest performance of Diana. I was not surpised to see the group that gathered around the set, drawn by the elegant sound of Ms Krall. I happily answered questions as to the identity of this wonderful artist, and I'm sure sent a few on their way to buy this album! My favorite piece, Peel Me a Grape, is guaranteed to steam up the windows. Lower the lights and listen with your significant other!
The voice or the piano playing? It's difficult to know which to mention first on this intimate, beautifully phrased album. I defy anone to listen to Diana Krall sing "Peel Me A Grape" and emerge unmoved. A flawless, georgeously arranged set of songs that must affect anyone who's been in love--it covers all areas.
This is probably one of my favorite albums. Diana is wonderful. The intimicy, the playfulness, the great piano playing and the guys with her. "Peel me a grape" is naughty and a knockout! Love "all and nothing at all", "Garden in the Rain" and everyone of her choices. It isn't just rehashing old songs, it's finding the beauty in them again and reinventing them in such a simple/but talented way. Very much recommended.
I saw Diana Krall perform live at Carnige Hall/ NY this summer and she brought the house down smoking! A great addition or starter to your jazz collection.
