Leviathan
: This band combines so many different types of music into one and it sounds amazing. Mastodon is a band that I feel any metalhead of any kind could probably enjoy them because they are so unique and so undeniably good sounding. They definitely improved on this one, and on this release they sound like a band that could break through into the mainstream. I certainly hope that happens because I think the general public needs a band like Mastodon to show how good metal can get. The best songs are "Blood and Thunder", "Naked Burn", and "Iron Tusk" but I guarantee you when you are done listening to this CD the first thing you'll want to do is start it over from track 1. It's just that good. On an end note, I saw these guys blow Fear Factory off the stage, they made that band look like a joke.
mastodon is one of the most unique bands ive ever heard. this cd is very different from anything else ive listened to. they have some very nice solos scattered throughout this album and the drums are very good. the 13 minute song "hearts alive" is amazing and reminds me of some old metallica. the writing theme is based on mythology and they did a good job writing about it. i gave this a 4 out of 5 because i think the vocals were mixed too low, its hard to understand him at some points in the album. however, i would reccomend this to any metal fan.
This is a great CD. You can never go wrong with Mastodon. My favorite track is "Seabeast". Brann Dailor...what a drummer. Between him and Dave Witte of Burnt by the Sun, Relaspe has two great drummers. Like to other reveiwer said, "Metallica should take notes."
Nearly an unclassifiable band Mastodon takes thrash and fuses it with progressive rock and metalcore and create an amazing and original sound, and deliver killer tunes. How many bands can make as big a wave as Mastodon has? Few. Mastodon appeal to everyone from the most brutal of death metal fans to black-haired, tight-pants fashioncore kids. The talent of the band was imminent even in their earliest output, but they topped themselves with the "Remission" full length. "Leviathan" starts off heavy. "Blood And Thunder" is a pretty standard Mastodon track but with a slight change in the vocal delivery. There's screaming, shrieking, slurring, choking and even singing on this record. No two songs sound alike. Gives it a good variety. Every riff sounds as though it were pulled from a different genre or, in some cases, the riffs can't be described as anything but 'Mastodon riffs'. "Leviathan" refuses to reside passively as background music. This is a "grab you and shake you, choke you, and smash your face in" type of album. This demands your attention. Definately a group to watch, as they seem to not fall into steriotypes, but move forward and astound us as long as their careers allow them. Definately nothing but 5 stars for this band and this album.
If you, like me, are already familiar with the phenome known as Mastodon- then there is no need to read this. You already own the album.IF you aren't familiar with them, what you need to do is buyit! A must have for fans of Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, In Flames, God Forbid, Today is the Day, Acid Bath, or any other kickin' metal act out there. This is the best band you will ever hear in a long time, the freakin' drummer is the lead, and he does a chaotically wonderfull job. the vocals are a bit cleaner than on their last album, which may help it appeal to a broader audience. All of the guitar work is as original as it is excellent, with the added bonus of screaming courtesy of Neurosis' singer on the track "Aqua Dementia". The Last song, "Joseph Merrick" is a beautifully crafted acoustic and organ number reminiscent of a Pink Floyd jam. Buy it or be trampled!
