Late Registration
: I wasn't a big fan of College Dropout when it came out. There were a few songs that made me do a double-take, but for the most part the stuff I was hearing was already being done in the underground Hip Hop scene (Mos Def, MF Doom, MC Paul Barman, Mr Lif, Cyne, Madlib, etc). Kanye West was only bringing it to the mainstream in my view. Then I caught all the news of him being intensely ego-centric and high on the new album he was producing. Naturally, I was eager for 'Late Registration' to come out and fail miserably.
Well, it came out and I gave it an honest listen. I can say without prejudice that 'Late Registration' is ridiculously good, kids. One of the best of 2005. It's been a while since I've listened to such a mainstream album and get hooked on song after song on the first time around. The production techniques, song writing, chord progressions, guest stars, skits... it's all entertaining. Give a close listen to Heard 'Em Say, Roses, Celebration, and We Major especially (even though I think he was biting a bit from MF Doom's "Hoe Cakes" on it).
Late Registration is the best hip-hop album to debut in 2005. Period. Buy it. Enough said.
I admit that I downloaded the album about two weeks ago, because I couldn't wait any longer. So for two weeks I have been enjoying one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. I still love College Dropout, this is just a more universal record. Once again we have a rapper who doesn't bore us with talking about weapons/violence, nor is he starting beef with other rappers (although get em high had to be a dis at 50). If you still don't have this album, get it. If you do, enjoy.
This album is better than Kanye West's first album "The College Dropout." While no song is quite as good as "Jesus Walks" or "Spaceship" the overall quality of this album is improved over Kanye's debut. His lyrics and rapping ability are better, and the songs focus on more interesting subjects than the majproty of songs on "The College Dropout" did. I'm not a big fan of rap (I'm into 90's R&B and Hip-Hop soul) but I enjoy any soulful music, and there is a lot to be found here. My favourite songs on the album are:
Touch the Sky:
There is a great beat to this song, I love the line "I think I died in that accident 'cause this must be heaven," and the horns. Kanye tells us about his start in the music industry.
Gold Digger:
This song is similar to "Slow Jamz" in a way, but it's better. It has an amazing soul sample from Ray Charles. Its sounds incredible with the volume up. It's one of the more soulful tracks on the album.
Drive Slow:
Another soulful song with a great beat, though this one does not use a soul sample. The musical arragement on this track is great.
My Way Home:
This is more of an interlude than a song, but is yet another one with lots of soul and features a nice rap by Common.
Addiction:
This is an interesting song with strong lyrics and an amazing, almost hypnotizing beat. Again there is no lack of soul in this song.
Diamonds from Sierra Lione:
The most creative song on the album, with the sampling of the theme from "Diamonds are Forever." Strong lyrics and once again a great beat make a classic track.
Gone:
Another of the most soulful tracks on the album. There is another amazing soul sample which is used very well in this song. Great musical arrangement as well.
9.3/10
Yet again Kanye pulled it off. It even surpassed the legendary College Dropout.
