Here are some customer reviews of
Krups GVX1-14 Burr Grinder , Black
: The grinder is not that big as one reviewer felt. It is reasonably quiet and fast, and I don't have any problem with grinds getting everywhere. The motor seems plenty macho to rip through the beans that come its way. The problem is that it doesn't feed beans into the grinding mechanism reliably so you have to open it up and poke the beans down into the grinder from time-to-time. It's not a very big issue, but it is a continuing one and we've never had a grinder before that did this.
One of the reasons I purchased this grinder was the "cup" setting, figuring it would be nice not to have to measure before pouring the coffee into the filter.
Unfortunately, the setting is next to useless because beans stop falling into the grinder at least once per grind, meaning you never know how much ground coffee you will actually get. Since the cup setting is simply a timer, every second the motor is heard spinning without load is a second the ground coffee should be falling into the cup.
The massive static charge generated in the plastic grounds holder would be something I could live with, but completely inconsistent amounts of ground coffee obviates the entire reason I bought it.
If you're willing to treat the grinder as something to grind beans and you'll hit the on/off switch and shake and pound the grinder as often as necessary to get the amount of ground coffee you need, it's great and it does generate a nice, consistent quality of grind, but having to fight with it and shake it several times just to get enough ground coffee to make four cups simply isn't worth the morning hassle to me.
I have never had this experience with Krupps product. But this one, I could not even turn it on. Packed it up and sent it back to Amazon.
This little grinder exhibits many of the cons posited below, I'll grant you that, but frankly I don't find it to be such a big deal. If you can adapt to minor idiosyncrasies (and why you couldn't is beyond me), then you'll concern yourself with more important things in your life. Almost every argument against it is easily solved with just a smidgen of ingenuity. When the beans don't drop into the mill, I pick it up and give it a little shake (it's very small). After it finishes grinding, I simply tap the side and top of the container so the clingy grounds fall. I carefully pour the ground coffee into a storage container, or I use a coffee scoop to transfer enough to my coffee maker to brew right away (I really don't know how that could be such a challenge.) It isn't the grinder that's messy, it's the user.
I will agree with one complaint. The coarsest setting doesn't seem very coarse at all, certainly not enough for my French press. Otherwise, I love this little grinder.
One other reviewer stated that this grinder is ungodly big - soooo not true. At a little under 10 inches tall, 5 inches deep, and 4 and 1/2 inches wide, this grinder is WAY smaller than my previous Cuisinart Burr Grinder which just recently broke. And the noise! DECIBLES quieter than my Cuisinart!!! It is such a low sound for a grinder. Mainly sounds a little louder than a murmur....First time I grinded coffee, I nearly jumped for joy that the volume was loads lower than my other one! Grinds were also very even. I grind in between medium and fine, and I did not see extremely powerdy grinds or even course grinds. Everything was very even in it's texture! Great grinder. I love it already!!!
