 Merrill Markoe's worthy epic is an edgy addition to the burgeoning new literary genre that includes such comic gems as Bridget Jones, Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic duo, and Dorothy Samuels' witty take on the perils of thirty-something romance and modern celebrity, Filthy Rich.Only readers who insist on happy endings where the heroine dances off into the sunset with her dreamboat will be disappointed. Everyone else will be touched and amused by this well-written and finely observed saga of a woman in her late 30's taking stock of her unmarried existence on successive birthdays.
If you're single and starting to feel like the world is floating right on by, while you remain hovering in a holding pattern. . . this book is for you. You'll laugh and when you're done, you'll realize things really aren't THAT bad.

This book started off with me thinking it was hilarious and I was laughing so hard I was almost crying. But after the narrator's first birthday was over her bitterness towards her parents got to be not so funny. I often wondered, why does she not just stop spending her birthday with them? They were awful people who treated her very badly for the most part. I read the whole book but I was not laughing anymore by the end.
What a horrible book. I don't think I've ever read a book where someone complained through the entire thing. The book is about a woman who decides to journal her birthdays to see if she has made improvements in her life. If you don't like something in your life, change it.. stop complaining. For someone who is 36 years old she acts like a whiny teenager. I just wanted to grab her by the shoulders, shake her and say "stand up for yourself.. for once!". She's pushed around by everyone in her life. She doesn't stand up to anyone. What a disappointment.
