I Say a Little Prayer: A Novel
: I waited for the book to come out and I left work early to get the book from my local book store, before the bookshelf became empty. I could not wait to get into the book and I loved every bit of it. Harris is back at it again and at his best!! The topic was controversial but much needed in our African-American community. "Where do Gays and Lesbians go when they can't find what they are searching for in the church?" Harris did a great job with this book and I am so ready for the next one. Write on E. Lynn, Write on!
Okay, I truly love E. Lynn Harris, I have all of his books and was really excited about this one. Well, after I got done reading, I was like, "ummm, what happened???" I did like Chauncey's character, but the story kind of left me hanging, it was truly boring, I hope he brings Chauncey back in future books, but I hope he let's his readers get to know Chauncey a little better.
Great book, ELH is a genius with a pen. I just hates the fact that he makes us crave his next book like a crackhead. Highly recommended if you're a fan of his previous work.
Interesting subject... But the story had way too much going on, with half-developed characters. Really who cared who Chauncey slept with? I was more interested in the Skylar scenes, he was very funny and engaging, and more importantly he knew who he was. Seeing how E Lynn Harris, had such a big break, this was a not worth the wait. He alluded that some of the past characters (Basil and Yancey B) were still alive and thriving, why not focus a little more on them???
One thing in the book really pissed me off- The main character was puzzled that his co-worker, a highly educated woman was unable to tell the difference in a straight man and a [...] man. NEWSFLASH- men make it very difficult to find out this little tidbit, it is called being on the down low, and if you notice the majority of Chauncey's and Skylar's partners had women on the side, meaning that they were on the down low, yet women are supposed to be able to spot a down low man.. OH PLEASE
Why E Lynn Harris is an excellent writer, this was not one of his best works.
I had to put down a book I was already reading to read this & I loved as I expected. I enjoyed the new character. It was so true to the times. Can't wait for the next one.
