I recently was given this CD as a present from my mother..I'm eighteen and she told me I would love this CD. I had my doubts, since I usually don't share her taste in music. But boy was she right! This CD was amazing! The music was wonderful, the lyrics were sometimes unsual, sometimes quirky, sometimes downright weird, but always fun. That also goes for the music, which is very whimsical. The best songs on this album are "Oh! You Pretty Things" and "Fill Your Heart," which is probably one of the most fun, joyous, all-out lovable songs I've ever heard. Many science fiction elements are here, such as "homo sapiens have outgrown their use," implying that another race will be here soon or perhaps the "narrator" is from that other race... This alludes a great deal to the classic "Ziggy Stardust." If you are new to Bowie, this is a great disk to start at, because it shows the fun, wacky side of Bowie...and what a genius he is.
The music may be a bit simple, but it's enthralling no less. After listening to the simple lyrics of Frank Sinatra [the other most frequented artist in my collection, go figure...], this is quite a change. Changes, likely the most infamed track off the album, is rather catchy and I never hesitate to skip it when in rotation, but doesn't seem to strike me as the best piece. Eight Line Poem + Life on Mars are both creepy, alluding ballads, both excellent. The reminiscent blues sound in Song for Bob Dylan makes it worth the listen; Andy Warhol, for whatever reason [that i cannot name], I find myself constintly listening to. However... Quicksand holds the test of time, atleast my cd collection, as one of my favourite songs. Hands down. It's not the most particularly poppy songs, no sugary lyrics that repeat in your brain until you're at the cliff of insanity...the mood of the piece itself isn't my typical dish, either. But what seperates itself is the lyrics. Quite frankly, it makes me a bit uncomfortable--Crowley, Himmler, Bardot, Garbo, Churchill, etc. 'Tis uneasy + a tad bit creepy, yet equally enthralling. The album is different, a perfected blending of genres--artsy even, and defintely one of my most preferred. 70s Bowie was always the greatest and in my opinion, this is his greatest album from the period. Not a song I skip over. Only have Ziggy Stardust? No fear. Your opinion on the man could very well differ whether what album you possess. And if your collection is nulled, get this one. Worth every penny.
