Here are some customer reviews of
Avalon
: OK, here's the deal: I grew up in the 80's listening to Roxy Music on vinyl and life was good. Then came the CD and record companies simply "dumped" all the world's music straight onto CD with no attention to the shortcomings of digital media. The result: my lovely music such as that found on Roxy Music's Avalon ended up sounding thin, hashy, and downright poor. I commend the remastering of this album - it is one of the best of the 80's and this treatment provides the listener to an aural treat full of rich textures, subtle sounds and lush instrumentation. I wish more companies would go back through their catalogue of 1st issue CDs and give them a once- over for the millenium. I look forward to a remastered version of "Flesh and Blood" next.
i have to say this is about one of my favorite albums. more than this, avalon, etc., are some songs that give me great memories. i first heard this album in '83... ... here's to the best music....
An album full of romance, that sounds like heaven to my ears... Ferry's lyrics are superb. Funky basses & drums make the perfect couple with crying guitars & saxes. Lord, why can't I rate Avalon with 10 stars????
Along with Van Morrison's "Moondance," this is the most romantic album in rock. Part of the hipster groove laid down here is thanks to master drummer Andy Newmark. When he slips into position on the intro to "More Than This," the magic begins. Every song here is filled with romantic longing, from the obvious hits ("Avalon," "Take A Chance With Me") to the unknown gems ("True to Life," "To Turn You On"). Ferry tried to capture some of this magic on "Boys and Girls" (and succeeded on "Slave to Love"), but in music, the whole is almost always greater than the sum of its parts. Still sounds fresh 20 years later, so raise your hip quotient and get this beauty.
"Avalon" was Roxy Music's last and most beautiful album, but ultimately it is a disappointing final effort from this band. It completely lacks the energy, thrill and fun of early Roxy Music. I like the hit singles of this release, "More than this" and the title track, but the rest is not particularly interesting. It's a bit too lazy and calm. Nevertheless, for those who are able to get into the music, it could be a nice relaxation cd. It's not an essential buy, and the hit singles are featured on Roxy Music's and Brian Ferry's compilations.
